Gubernatorial candidates talk education

Former U.S. Congressman Scott McInnis, Republican candidate for Colorado governor, told charter school advocates they would have an “open door” if he is elected and added, “I’m one of you.”

McInnis spoke Friday to the Colorado League of Charter Schools’ annual conference at a downtown Denver hotel.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Democratic candidate for governor, addressed the same group on Thursday.

“I’ll argue that there’s never been a candidate for governor who’s spent more time with teachers, more time with parents of students and more time in schools,” he said.

Hickenlooper said his experience of being on that “ground level” led to his belief that “we needed … revolutionary changes in the system.”
