YEP-NYC: Education Innovators

YEP-NYC presents: Education Innovators with Relay Graduate School of Education, Generation Citizen, and The New Community College at CUNY

Education Innovators will be an opportunity to hear from the leaders of three new, exciting education initiatives that are gaining momentum and promise to make a significant impact on education in NYC and beyond. Learn about their inception, mission, theory of change, vision for the future and lessons from their founders on turning ideas into action:

-Generation Citizen partners college students with classroom teachers to teach an action civics course in which teens solve problems they are facing in their own communities. Generation Citizen’s action-based program aims to revolutionize civics education in this country by building a new generation of youth activists and leaders, a generation inspired and equipped to make change. Generation Citizen was founded in the Fall of 2008 by two students at Brown University, Scott Warren and Anna Ninan.

-The New Community College at CUNY is the University’s first new community college in more than 40 years. The second community college in Manhattan was inspired by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein’s interest in improving graduation rates for CUNY’s diverse urban students with a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The New Community College connects field experiences with classroom learning in a structured and supportive environment. The New Community College enrolled its inaugural class of 300 students in the fall of 2012. As an open-admissions institution, The New Community College will accept applicants who have a high school diploma or a GED.

-Relay Graduate School of Education is a ground-breaking graduate school with an innovative Master’s degree program designed specifically to respond to today’s urgent demand for effective and successful teachers. Chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in February 2011, Relay GSE is the first independent graduate school of education to be newly credentialed in New York in more than 80 years.
