Foundation that funds many of city charter schools that participated in rally … touts rally

From an email from Ed Kirby at the Walton Family Foundation:

“More than 15,000 parents, teachers and students marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City Tuesday all the way to City Hall to show their intense support for high-performing charter schools that are now serving tens of thousands of low-income and minority students.”

“This week’s rally was organized by outstanding teachers, parents and advocates that have helped high-performing charter schools to thrive in New York City. We will continue to be strong supporters of the individuals and organizations that have built New York City’s charter school sector and are every day empowering New York City parents to choose more and more high-quality educational choices.

New York City’s charter schools are facing increasing uncertainty about their funding and their access to facilities which today allownearly 70,000 students to attend one of 183 public charter schools. More than 50,000 parents are on waiting lists to enroll their children in public charters.

I encourage you to learn more about this week’s rally, and read what one parent had to say about what her daughter’s school means for their family. When parents are empowered and supported to form a unified voice for better schools, the results are inspiring.”
