Downtown Elementary Beta Club receives national honor

Downtown Elementary School’s Beta Club was recently recognized as a National Beta School of Distinction for its dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness.

Beta Clubs are geared toward building character and leadership skills in elementary and secondary students, according to its website.

“This national award speaks highly of your commitment to academic rigor, and illustrates our dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness,” said Bob O. Bright, the National Beta Club’s CEO.  “A Beta Club in your school provides a unique learning experience that allows students to achieve lifelong goals.”

During the holiday season, students in Downtown Elementary’s Beta Club donated hundreds of clothing, toiletry and other items to the Memphis Union Mission.

“At Downtown Elementary, we value the importance of developing the ‘whole child,'” said Yolanda Martin, the school’s principal. “Participating in leadership activities such as the Beta Club will surely lay the foundation for our students to become leaders in society in the future.”
