Fast facts about Memphis schools for 2016-17

The school year kicked off this week for Shelby County Schools and most schools operated under Tennessee’s Achievement School District in Memphis. Here are some fast facts for easy reference:

Shelby County Schools

  • Projected students: about 107,000 in K-12, down from about 109,000 last school year
  • Total employees: about 12,000, down from about 14,000 last school year
  • Total teachers: about 5,800, down from about 6,200 last school year

Innovation Zone schools under Shelby County Schools

  • 22 schools
  • New in fall 2016: Westhaven Elementary, Westwood High, Mitchell High, Douglass High
  • Launch year for the iZone: 2012

Achievement School District

  • Students: about 12,000, about 11,400 of which are in Memphis
  • Employees on the LEA Support Team: 21
  • Total schools statewide: 33, including 26 conversions and seven new starts
  • Schools in Memphis: 31; Schools in Nashville: 2
  • Charter operators: 13; ASD-run schools in Memphis: 5
  • Launch year for the ASD: 2012
  • New in fall 2016: Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School, Raleigh-Egypt Middle School (both operated by Scholar Academies), Hillcrest High School, Kirby Middle School (both operated by Green Dot Public Schools)
