The Daily Churn: Friday

What’s churning:

Money for the other part of Race to the Top was awarded this week. The Department of Education gave $170 million to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers and $160 million to the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium for development of multi-state tests, assessments that could be used to replace the CSAPs in four or five years.

Colorado is a member of both partnerships so is positioned to take advantage of their work – potentially saving some of the big bucks it would cost to replace CSAPs with a Colorado-only test. Get more details from EdWeek or The New York Times. And here’s the info from DOE.

The journalism school at the University of Colorado at Boulder isn’t the only one struggling with how to train would-be scribes for a business that’s changed dramatically in the last 15 years and that will shift a lot more. InsideHigherEd.com has an interesting look at the Boulder situation and the broader picture.

What’s on tap:

The Higher Education Strategic Planning Steering Committee takes another crack at its strategic plan draft from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Department of Higher Education, 1560 Broadway (here’s the latest suggestion from staff). … Another panel that’s struggled some in recent meetings, the State Council on Educator Effectiveness, meets from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the State Board of Education meeting room, 201 E. Colfax Ave. The session marks the shift to a new twice-monthly meeting schedule (agenda).
