Briefs: West Denver Prep now STRIVE Prep

The growing West Denver Prep charter network has changed its name to STRIVE Preparatory Schools as its campuses spread across the city.

The network began with a single school in southwest Denver. This fall, it will serve 1,700 students in grades 6-9 in seven schools, with new campuses opening in Montbello and Green Valley Ranch.

The network’s first high school also opens this fall at the former site of Denver Lutheran High School, serving 168 ninth-graders.

“The new name carries special significance and symbolism because the emphasis of ‘striving’ for a college education and college preparation has been a key part of our mission since the first school opened in 2006,” said STRIVE founder and CEO Chris Gibbons.

Douglas County School District officially kicks off the new year this morning as students on its modified calendar return to classes.

Media are invited to join Superintendent Liz Fagen today as she visits Clear Sky Elementary in Castle Rock. The school is one of the first to welcome students back.

The rest of Dougco students – those on the district’s traditional calendar – will be returning to schools within the week.

“The Douglas County School District will continue its work to revolutionize American education this year,” according to a district press release. “As explained in our Strategic Plan, we are dedicated to providing our students with a variety educational choices so they can find one that best meet their needs.”

Dougco barely beats Aurora in large metro-area districts returning to classes this week – secondary students in Aurora Public Schools go back to school Tuesday while elementary students have their first full day on Thursday.
