Hundreds of Jeffco parents, teachers rally against school board

Kim Reweti, a Jeffco Public Schools speech pathologist and parent, holds a sign supporting her fellow teachers at the corner of Wadsworth Boulevard and Chatfield in southern Jefferson County. Reweti was one of hundreds of parents and teachers who lined a 30 mile stretch of Wadsworth — from the Chatfield to 104th Avenue — to raise awareness of their fears that a conservative board of education majority is “destroying their schools,” as one parent put it.

Tensions between some portions of the Jefferson County community and the board are at an all time high as several critical decisions about the future of the school district are about to be made. On the board’s agenda during the next two months include hiring a new superintendent, ratifying a collective bargaining agreement with its teachers union, and approving nearly a billion dollar budget.

To date, however, the board has made few if any decisions to significantly alter the status quo in Jeffco.
