Aurora school board approves superintendent contract extension

Superintendent Rico Munn will lead the Aurora school district for another three years.

The district school board voted 5 to 2 Tuesday night to extend Munn’s contract. He has led the district since 2013.

The contract calls for an annual salary of $267,422, which is what he already makes, and allows for future raises consistent with those other administrative staff receive.

While all board members said earlier this month that they supported renewing the contract, board member Kayla Armstrong Romero and board president Marques Ivey voted against the contract Tuesday. They previously said they wanted a shorter contract term.

The draft proposal had already been negotiated, and a district attorney told them it could not be changed.

The current contract, which ends at the end of this school year, did not need to be renewed yet, but board members chose to do so ahead of schedule and against the teachers union’s request to wait until three new board members who will be elected in November get a say.

By approving a contract for three years, the next renewal will not fall during an election year.

Bruce Wilcox, the union president, spoke to the board again Tuesday night and said the board’s opportunity for comment at the last meeting was “pointless.”

“Your discussion was more of a justification of your decision that you had reached one month prior,” Wilcox said. “You are simply checking a box.”

Munn thanked the board for renewing his contract, allowing him the opportunity to continue the district’s work.
