On Tuesday, a committee of state board members met for the first time since the abrupt end of last month’s meltdown meeting.
Those anticipating continuation of the brawl may have been surprised but what happened — an actual strategic planning session broke out.
In fact, the half-day discussion was cordial and productive. State Superintendent Glenda Ritz and fellow board members, led by Dan Elsener, talked about mission statements, objectives and goals for K-12 education in Indiana.
Things should be different today. Board members actually should get to talking about their problems.
A representative of the National Association of State Boards of Education is here at Gov. Mike Pence’s request to mediate a discussion about the roles of the state superintendent and board members. If ever there was going to be a meeting where board members put their grievances with each other on the table this is it. There is no agenda to worry about. This is a free-flowing “orientation” meeting with the expressed purpose of trying to resolve differences and get the board to a more functional place.
