The Center for Arts Education won a $1.1 million grant to develop a Common Core aligned arts curriculum and implement it in New York City middle schools, the organization announced on Friday morning.
The curriculum that CAE develops will be adaptable by districts nationwide. “We have long been committed to providing arts education opportunities to New York City public school students, and we look forward to continuing that work while helping to create a program that can be replicated for the benefit of students throughout the country,” CAE Executive Director Eric G. Pryor said.
In the spring, CAE was one of the organizations that pressed mayoral candidates to explain their commitments to arts education, which has been difficult for many schools to maintain in recent years in the wake of numerous rounds of budget cuts.
“We look forward to seeing what the next generation of leadership in this city has to say about arts in our schools,” Pryor said in March.
