The Shelby County Schools board will decide Tuesday how to use more than $9 million it unexpectedly got from the state.
School administrators want add the $9,961,972 to the district’s general fund operating budget. They originally planned to take the money from its savings account, also known as its fund balance.
School districts in Tennessee are required to maintain 3 percent of its total operating budget in its fund balance. The funds can be used for academic expenses when the operating budget does not fully meet the districts needs.
The district cut more than $220 million from its budget this past spring after it lost thousands of students to the state-run Achievement School District, new charter schools, and six municipalities that split from the district.
Details weren’t available Thursday about why the state could provide the $9 million more in per-pupil funding.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. at 160 S. Hollywood in Memphis.
The district will also accept a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services in the amount of $10,689,191 to operate a Head Start program beginning this month through December.
