Students around the city logged in at 8 a.m. from their district-provided devices from their homes or from dozens of virtual learning centers set up at churches and day care centers.

Collections and food drives have already popped up, with more likely to follow.

The decision sends the Shelby County Schools proposed budget for building maintenance back to the school board to edit. It also adds urgency for the district to produce its long-term “Reimagining 901” plan.
