It’s never too early to get a head start on the high school search, Ashanti Andersen said. She’s in sixth grade, but she and her mom came to the high school fair in Queens anyway, just so they could begin getting an idea of her options for when she needs to choose her high school preferences in two years.
Ashanti said she most wanted to go to a school with a good music and science program and talked to representatives of several schools, her mother standing by, listening and occasionally asking a question, too.
Ashanti’s mother is involved in local school governance and came to the fair with a group of eighth graders but brought her own daughter along, too, so Ashanti could get a leg up on the competition in two years.
“I’m taking advantage of this event because next year she has to start looking into high schools,” Ashanti’s mother said.
