You may have — OK, you no doubt have — seen this viral video of a Charlotte, North Carolina, teacher who starts each morning with an elaborate, personalized greeting for each of his students.
Barry White, a fifth-grade English teacher, and his colleagues say the routine helps build the kind of relationships that are essential for students at their school, where almost all students come from poor families and only a third score at grade level on state tests. (The Charlotte Observer featured the school in a series about local philanthropic efforts to break the link between poverty and achievement.)
White’s moves might be unique, but his strategy isn’t — many teachers create routines meant to make each of their students feel special. Are you one of them? If so, let us know. Bonus points if you send us a video so we can share it with our readers.
