When New York State’s education policy-making body put forth a proposal last month that would have made it easier for low-rated teachers to appeal their evaluations, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s criticism was sharp and fierce.
“Today’s recommendations are another in a series of missteps by the Board of Regents that suggests the time has come to seriously reexamine its capacity and performance,” the governor said.
The Regents tabled the plan. But poll results released today suggested that if they had pressed on, they might have had public support.
A poll out of the Siena Institute today finds that New Yorkers trust the State Education Department and Regents more than Cuomo, by a margin of nearly three to one.
The poll also found that New Yorkers continue to prefer Cuomo’s tax-free strategy for paying for expanded pre-kindergarten programs over New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s funding plan. And it found that half agree with a proposal put forth last month by state legislators from both parties to delay consequences of Common Core-aligned tests for two years.
