Innovation schools

The 8-1 vote on the recommendations came amid increasing public pressure to retain the power of the elected school board over district buildings and transportation.

The day before the ILEA votes on final recommendations to send to lawmakers, the mayor and superintendent announced five things they want to see in the final draft. But a plan for who oversees schools didn’t make their list.

The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance could make specific recommendations for key issues like funding, transportation, and the growth of public schools — or it could let state lawmakers fill in the blanks.

The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance is meeting Dec. 3 to start narrowing down recommendations for changing who runs schools.

The third meeting of the Indianapolis Local Education Alliance focused on the challenges of the different building arrangements based on school type.

Converting to a charter school would have provided the K-8 school an additional $400,000 per year, according to one official, that would have funded a new foreign language teacher and a school resource officer.

Indianapolis educators, parents, and students will share their stories of back-to-school at this story slam co-hosted by Chalkbeat Indiana on Aug. 21.

The new group, created by state lawmakers, will issue recommendations later this year on how charter schools and IPS can share transportation and facility resources.

A credit card assigned to the former charter school official accrued tens of thousands of dollars in travel, high-end dining, and alcohol purchases. The official was terminated earlier this year.

New and existing charter schools will go before authorizers to ask for new campuses in the city, mergers, and more. Some schools won’t open until the fall, but public meetings are getting underway.

A petition from the union says ‘the unchecked expansion of charter schools’ is a big threat to IPS. But some want the district and charters to cooperate.

As a bill requiring IPS to share property tax revenue advances, members of the public debated the extent to which different types of schools should receive funding.

District officials say they hope there’s a rebound in middle school enrollment similar to the one IPS experienced when it closed and consolidated high schools 7 years ago.

The schools as a whole show mixed results on tests such as the state’s ILEARN and IREAD exams.

While test results for K-8 Innovation Network schools haven’t significantly boosted the district’s academic performance, Innovation high schools show better results.

Edison School of the Arts terminated Nathan Tuttle last year after allegations that he had said a racial slur to a student. He later filed a wrongful termination suit.

The updated application process grew out of a board resolution affirming its desire to collaborate with schools of all kinds, including charters.

The school board voted 7-0 on Thursday to approve the Innovation agreement with Believe Circle City High School.

The resolution calls for ‘greater coherence, clarity, and collaboration’ between all public schools.
